CP503
Balance due — second reminder
A CP503 is the second reminder about an unpaid balance. The IRS hasn't heard from you on the earlier notices, so the letters are getting firmer — but this is still a letter, not an action. No levy happens at this stage.
The step that matters here is contact. Paying, arranging a plan, or calling the number on the notice by the due date keeps the account out of the lien-filing stage the notice describes.
- This notice and any earlier ones for the same year
- Your tax return for the year shown
- Proof of payments already made
- A record of any calls or letters you've already exchanged with the IRS
- Confirming what the IRS actually has on file for you, via transcripts
- Stopping the escalation by getting a payment arrangement or hardship status in place
- Handling a Collection Appeals Program request if a lien is the worry
- Dealing with the IRS directly so the letters stop going unanswered

The next step
Holding a CP503 and want it handled?
The first step is a free consultation — a quiet conversation with a licensed professional, no pressure and nothing to prepare. If you want to go further, we investigate your IRS file and put what we find in a written report. That’s free too.
